Visitors Centre

The Visitors Centre at Barack Obama Plaza is an exciting exhibition showcasing the history of Irish emigration across the world. Particular celebration goes to the journey of a Moneygall descendant departing the small village in Co.Offaly in 1851 in search of a better life.

From Moneygall to the White House – Irish born, raised & son of the local shoemaker, Falmouth Kearney, is part of Irish-American history as the 3rd Great Grandfather to former President of the United States, Barack Obama.

The exhibition tells the story of Ireland’s long history of emigration away from Irish soil, The Great Hunger and the relationship with the United States.

The Irish Famine is a root cause for the reasons we have over 70 million people spread across the globe with links to Irish ancestry. It is estimated that nearly 40 million Irish Americans are currently living in the United States. The Irish influence in America can proudly be traced to signatories on the declaration of independence and the President in The Oval Office; the highest office in the free world.

The exhibition highlights the long lineage of US Presidents with Irish ancestry and connections. The most famous is; John F. Kennedy who made a return journey to his homestead in Wexford in 1963. Ronald Reagan made an Irish visit in 1984 to explore his roots in Co. Tipperary. Bill Clinton’s history is documented with his influence in Northern Ireland & Irish connections.

The rich history of the shamrock and the its role as the symbol of Ireland, St.Patrick and it’s important use in US/Irish relations is on display for visitors wishing to know a little bit more.

Moneygall offers visitors a chance to see the ancestral home of Barack Obama; and visit local businesses & attractions in the area. This may include children’s activity park or take a scenic walk around the “Rock of Loyer” walking loop.

Guided tours can also be arranged at the nearby Cloncannon Bio Farm which can complement various educational itineraries. The Plaza is only a 10-minute drive to Cloughjordan, the home of 1916 Easter Rising Leader, Thomas McDonagh!

The Barack Obama Plaza is a fun filled and educational experience for all who choose to stop in for a visit.

We look forward to welcoming you here to The Barack Obama Plaza.
