Pat McDonagh purchases Loughrea Hotel & Spa

Pat McDonagh, Managing Director of Supermac’s,  has purchased the Loughrea Hotel & Spa today, saving 70 jobs in the process. Speaking about the business deal Pat McDonagh says “we are delighted to be safeguarding jobs locally which may otherwise have been lost. We are also most pleased that people who have events booked in the hotel can look forward to them in confidence and can be assured of receiving the finest quality hospitality and service.

The Loughrea Hotel & Spa is a Gateway facility to the West of Ireland and of great importance to development of tourism in the West. The hotel will receive significant investment for its refurbishment and upgrading which will enhance many of its current facilities and offer increased levels of comfort to visitors and locals alike.

It’s a pleasure to provide hotel facilities to Loughrea and its surrounding areas, as a hotel plays a vital role as an income provider in an area through its levels of employment, with visitors bringing business to the area through secondary spending and the hosting of social events and celebrations.

Having seen wonderful success through the growth of the Castletroy Park Hotel in Limerick during the last 18 months  – we hope to see a similar level of progress in the development of the Loughrea Hotel & Spa as we move forward.”

Barack Obama Plaza Creates 60 New Jobs for Moneygall

The Barack Obama Plaza, which is being developed by Pat and Una McDonagh, owners of the Supermac’s and Papa John’s Restaurant chains, is to create 60 new jobs for Moneygall.  75 new jobs have been created during the current construction phase of the Motorway Service Site.  The Plaza represents the single biggest investment on the Offaly/Tipperary Border in decades. Total cost of the development will be in excess of €7 million.

High standard facilities within the The Barack Obama Plaza will include a restaurant, convenience shop and fuel facilities and in addition will provide broadband connectivity free to visitors. The Plaza will open 24/7.

As an additional element recognising the historic significance of Moneygall as the birthplace of the ancestors of the President of the United States, the Plaza will provide a Community Facility for the use of the people of Moneygall.  The Barack Obama Community Facility will house on going displays of both historic and current material marking the relationship between Moneygall and the United States.

This is a most exciting time for both our business and the people of Moneygall.  We’ve received highly positive support from the people of the area and are delighted to be in a position to include a Community Facility for them in the development.  This will facilitate the growth of the area both economically and socially.  Commemorating President Barack Obama’s visit and the strong connections between Moneygall and the US will be vital to both the local area and visitors” says Pat McDonagh.

President Obama’s Irish Relative Henry Healy says of the announcement “It’s always fantastic to see a new facility coming to a small community.  Again it will enhance and expand on what we have to offer.  The museum is an exciting prospect.  It will enrich the experience for visitors and hopefully it will entice them to come into the village to visit us when they stop off.”

The development will be the only major purpose built motorway service facility on the new M7 route between Dublin and Limerick, and will be a key stop over point for motorists travelling through the midlands.  It is hoped that the new development will bring more tourists and visitors to the area, helping to contribute to the growth of the local economy.  The overall facility is vital in the provision of services to International Coach Tours planning to include the birthplace of Falmouth Kearney on their itineraries in Ireland.

Salt Reduction Initiatives

fsaiWe at Supermacs have been committed to reducing the salt content of our menu items and therefore helping to reduce the salt intake of our customers.  According to the FSAI, salt intake is currently at a population average of 10g per day, the recommended daily intake of salt is 4g per day, therefore the FSAI ran a salt reduction initiative with an aim to achieve a salt intake of 6g per day per person on average.

As part of the FSAI Salt Reduction Initiative, Supermacs considerably reduced the salt content of its foods and also worked with its suppliers to achieve the same.  It is thought that as much as 15-20% of salt in the diet is from discretionary sources such as salt added during cooking or at the dining table so there was huge scope for reduction even in the home.  A further 15% is naturally present in food while manufacturing and food processing accounts for 65-70% of salt added to food, for this reason Supermacs prides itself on selling natural unprocessed foods.  Supermacs have been commended by the FSAI not only for its involvement in the project but also for its commitment and achievement in achieving targets for salt reduction, these efforts are continuing.
